  AUBURN — The love story of Doreen and Roland LaPlante, a couple married for an astonishing 73 years, has sadly come to an end.

  Doreen, 91, passed away on Monday, April 1st, just over 2 weeks after the death of her beloved husband Roland, 96.

  Roland "Pretty" LaPlante passed away at home on March 15th. His obituary paints the picture of a man who was not only deeply loved by his community for his World War II heroics and dedication to his trade as a roofer but also cherished by a family that looked up to him.

  “He loved traveling with his wife and friends,” his obituary recalls, highlighting a life filled with joy and adventure shared with those closest to him.

  Doreen’s passing came after a struggle with dementia, with her final weeks spent in the care of the staff at Christopher House. Her family believes it was Roland’s death that led to her peaceful passing, a sentiment captured in her obituary stating, “She truly died of a broken heart when he passed a few weeks ago.” The obituary poignantly adds, "Their love story was one that you only see in the movies,” a testament to the depth of their connection and the impact it had on those around them.

  Doreen, with her remarkable grace, volunteered extensively, including at St. Vincent Hospital, where she comforted newborn babies. “She loved to travel and enjoyed yearly trips to Bermuda with her girlfriends as well as traveling with her husband and close friends,” her obituary notes, remembering her as a woman of beauty, kindness, and an infectious joy for life.
