Shrewsbury police capture armed assault suspect after pursuit

    SHREWSBURY — A Worcester man wanted on multiple violent charges was arrested late Monday night after a foot pursuit and drone-assisted search by Shrewsbury Police.

    Around 10:14 on Monday night, officers responded to Gifford Drive near Spring Street following reports of a suspicious man walking through yards, peering into vehicles, and hiding in bushes. When initial attempts to locate the man failed, police established a perimeter and deployed the department's drone unit to assist in the search.

    At approximately 11:45 p.m., Officer Carroll spotted the suspect near Route 140 and Merriam Avenue. The man fled on foot but was pursued by multiple officers. Lieutenant Kevin Caviston ultimately tackled the suspect as he attempted to flee through a fence. After a brief struggle, he was taken into custody.

    The suspect, identified as Gary Goyette, 30, of Worcester, was found carrying several allegedly stolen items, including multiple cell phones, debit cards, and property belonging to others.

    Goyette was charged with receiving stolen property over $1,200, carrying a dangerous weapon (knife), trespassing, and resisting arrest. Authorities also discovered 2 outstanding warrants for Goyette's arrest out of Worcester.

    A warrant includes charges of armed assault to murder, firearm use in a felony, carrying a loaded firearm without a permit, carrying ammunition without a permit, intimidation of a witness, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The second warrant charges him with assault and battery.

    Officers Chysna, Sloan, Renaud, Delaney, Bourette, Bartosik, Coates, Lyons, Sheehan and Sgt. Faucher assisted in the response.

    No injuries were reported during the incident.
